GitHub Copilot is an AI pair programmer integrated into VS Code, JetBrains, and other editors. Copilot CLI is GA (Feb 2026) and reads AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, and GEMINI.md files for context. It uses repository-wide instructions from .github/copilot-instructions.md, scoped path-specific instructions from .github/instructions/*.instructions.md files with YAML frontmatter, and custom agent definitions via .github/agents/*.agent.md files to customize code suggestions and chat responses.
